John Lennon marries Cynthia Powell
John Lennon married Cynthia Powell on August 23rd 1962, at the Mount Pleasant register office in Liverpool.
The couple had been dating since 1958 after meeting at Liverpool Art College. Upon hearing that Cynthia was pregnant with Julian, John suggested marriage.
Beatles' manager Brian Epstein was best man at the ceremony but their wedding was kept a secret from the rest of the world, as Epstein feared it would turn some female fans away from the group if they knew John was married.
After the ceremony Brian Epstein treated everyone to drinks and food at Reece's restaurant in Clayton Square. This is the same place Lennon's mother Julia and father Alf celebrated their weeding in 1938.
Cynthia divorced John on November 8th 1968, on the grounds of his adultery with Yoko Ono.
