Live: Wimbledon Palais, London

On December 14th 1963, members of the Beatles Fan Club were treated to a performance by the Beatles, at the Wimbledon Palais, London. This was the band's one and only gig at the Palais.

After the show the Beatles stood behind the bar, shook hands with and attempted to sign autographs for the 3,000 Fan Club members. This soon got out of hand and they had to leave as more and more people gathered.

The Beatles popularity was reaching a fevered pitch at this stage in 1963; the management at the Palais, fearing damage to the stage constructed a steel cage for the front to help keep the onslaught of screaming fans back. Lennon later remarked:

"If they press any harder they'll come through as chips."
