Jane Asher announces breakup with Paul McCartney
Jane Asher announced her split with Paul McCartney on July 20th 1968. The English actress told Simon Dee of the BBC that she was calling off their engagement. Three days earlier Asher failed to attend the world premiere of Yellow submarine in London; all other Beatle partners were in attendance.
"I haven't broken it off, but it is broken off, finished. I know it sounds corny, but we still see each other and love each other, but it hasn't worked out. Perhaps we'll be childhood sweethearts and meet again and get married when we're about 70." - Jane Asher
Asher and McCartney had been together since 1963, and their relationship was a huge influence on Paul's writing during that time. But McCartney is alleged to have had a string of affairs with other women; particularly during the Beatles' touring years.
Jane Asher is a celebrated British actress and sister of Peter Asher of Peter and Gordon, whom Paul wrote a number of songs for while still a member of the Beatles: including Woman and World Without Love.
